Women literacy program

Women literacy program

Teaching the Maasai women from Arkaria, Lendikinya and Eluwai, to read and write considerably increases their possibilities to have a better life.  The mayority of the married or widowed Maasai women, are illiterate and also, only speak Maa, the Maasai language, and this discourages their progress because they don't speak Swahili.

This fact puts them in an even more disadvantaged position in society, with few opportunities for improvement.
Objetives:
To teach the Maasai women of Arkaria, between the ages of 19 and 50 years of age, widows or married, to read and write organising classes to learn to read and write Swahili.

We have employed two women who have been able to attend secondary school. They are responsible for teaching in a dedicated  classroom in a place that is about 4 to 5 kilometres from the mayority of the women.
Benefitiaries:
Directly: 40 women working, 27 women in Arkaria, 12 in Lendikinya and 11 in Eluwai.
Indirectly: 355 women from Arkaria, Lendikinya and Eluwai, their children and all the Maasai community.

Material and transport: 500 € / year
Total 1.500 € / year
